Refereeing matches is a great way to be involved in football while earning some extra pocket money. We spoke to Esmé, a Young Referee with Hunts FA, to find out more about her experience:
I started refereeing for the Huntingdon Girls U11 team in September 2020 and did my referee course in May 2021.
I used to play in a girls team which taught me a lot about the rules of football and gave me the confidence to go forward with refereeing.
Every Saturday morning I referee one or two matches in our local area. From U10s to U15s, boys, girls and mixed teams I’ve reffed lots of different teams over this time.
I have to manage different characters, tempers and disagreements and be firm in my decisions. I have to work with the lines people and coaches and try to make sure the game runs as smoothly as possible whilst keeping to correct times.
I love the confidence it has given me by controlling the game and meeting lots of new people. The worst thing is probably the early starts or the weather - it’s not a fair weather sport!
